Why Clone Golf Clubs Can Shave Strokes Off Your Handicap
To begin with, the chief manufacturers of clone golf clubs are true golf companies in their own rights. Their own design departments produce club designs that are manufactured with the exact same materials the big OEM's use. These golf clubs incorporate the same design principles such as club volume, increased MOI and multi material irons, to name just a few.
The rules of golf lay down strict limits when it comes to club design. Club heads have to abide by these confines, otherwise they are deemed non-conforming and cannot be used in competitive play. That's not limited to the pro tours either. Using a non-conforming driver in your next club match could end up in a disqualification.
The top manufacturers of golf clones will submit their clubs to the game's governing bodies for approval (USPGA in the USA, R&A in Europe) in the same fashion as the main OEM's. This takes time, resources and is very expensive so nobody making shoddy fakes would go to the expense and effort of submitting their clubs, only to see them rejected.
Take titanium drivers for example. For a driver to be conforming, it has to have a volume of 460 cc maximum. It's not enough for a producer to claim their drivers are less than 460 cc. The game's governing bodies have to confirm they aren't. If they are under the limit, they go on the Conforming Driver lists. If they do measure over the 460 cc limit, they are placed on the Non-Conforming Driver lists.
Quick note here. Some suppliers of second-rate knock-offs proudly proclaim their drivers are conforming pointing to the fact that their drivers are not on the non-conforming lists. All that translates to is that they haven't been submitted for testing. If a club conforms, it's on the conforming list. Just because a drivers is on the conforming list, that doesn't make it conforming.
Creating conforming clubs takes a lot of attention and a lot of manufacturing skill. The limits placed by the rules are very strict and it only takes a tiny manufacturing discrepancy to end up with non-conforming clubs. Size isn't the only limit the rules make. With restrictions on club-face rebound for example (Coefficient of Restitution) potentially influenced by even the smallest deviation in thickness of the driver face, quality control is crucial.
Clone clubs from respected producers built according to the rules of the game and will make a much smaller dent in your wallet. Using the same quality materials as the big golf companies and with the same (or better) shafts, these are excellent golf clubs that will make golf that much more fulfilling. As an added benefit, many of the big companies offer custom build options on their clubs.
What you end up playing is a set of premium, conforming, custom built golf clubs that will perform as good as, if not better, than a set of costly off-the-rack OEM's. What you won't get is the price tag.
Not a bad deal for a set of custom golf clubs.
