The ages of baby boomers vary from those in their mid forties to people who are now in their sixties, some 4 million of whom will reach the age of 65 this 2011. With total numbers of over 77 million, these baby boomers will impact American society whether as those in middle age or to those on the brink of the geriatric years.
The life experiences of baby boomers of various ages have been much different. The first cohort of baby boomers who were born in the first half of the time frame were children in the time of the Cold War tensions of the 50's. A lot of them were far too young to have much memory of the Korean War, but remember quite clearly scenarios such as the Cuban missile dilemma. Their school days generally involved drills on how to take shelter just in case an atomic attack.
When this group is polled about events concerning their lives that they consider specifically significant, they usually mention the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, his brother Robert F. Kennedy, as well as civil rights figure Martin Luther King Jr. Movements that are important to them contain the environmental movement, the civil rights movement, and even the women's liberation movement. They experienced the Oil Embargo, fuel shortages and the Draft for the Vietnam War. While the earlier cohort's music revolved around the Beatles, the age Jones boomers have been introduced with punk, techno and the music videos of the new network, MTV.
The last category in the ages of baby boomers is the Golden Boomers. These are the members of the first cohort of the generation now in or nearing their sixties. Though fairly recent changes in the Social Security Law imply than some boomers will not obtain their benefits until they are 66 or 67 or perhaps even older, some will achieve their designated retirement age as early as the start of 2011.
