The age of baby boomers was ushered in with the first way of drastically increased births in 1946. Right after the finish of the second World War, the United States and much of the world entered a time period of relative peace and prosperity. Both of these points encourage the choice to have children and this "baby boom" trend continued till 1964.
The age of baby boomers has been important if for no other factor than their large numbers. The post war baby boom period of continual high birth rates produced an estimated 77 million people. Baby boomers have observed striking changes in technologies. Computers have transformed from bulky and heavy systems noticed only in colleges and large companies to gadgets as small as notebooks and even small enough to be part of "smart" cellular phones. In fact, they have observed the telephone transform from a black only device with a dial to one that fits in a pocket and it is used by a majority of Americans.
Things that did not exist prior to the age of baby boomers include space flight, satellite communications, organ transplants, coronary bypass procedures, artificial hearts, cat scans. The age of baby boomers is one of constant development and change, some of it so outstanding as to take the breath away. Even things once taken for granted such as the determination of death have changed. No more is the absence of a heartbeat the gold standard for that.
